Halls Gap Camp 2006.
The heavy security and inappropriately dressed customs officers didn’t
deter parents from leaving their children at the recent Halls Gap camp! Perhaps
it was because the security people were too friendly and the sniffer dogs were
nowhere to be found!
Campers were soon processed into groups where they had to invent new countries
of origin,- complete with national anthems, language, profiles, etc.
Co-director Nick Buscombe and his team made sure that new arrivals felt at home
and they were soon adding their own cultural identities and experiences to building
the camp’s temporary community.
Study Leader Ralph Mayhew guided us into thinking about Directions in life from
all points of the compass.
North -Now. Where are we now? Are we trusting God? Will we put our trust in Him?
East- Earnings. God is generous in promising to provide what we need.. What are
we prepared to give back to Him?
As a result the camp community gave an offering towards sponsoring needy campers
to the next camp. $ 365-00 was received –enough for two full camp fees!!!
South-Strengths. Are we aware of our abilities and strengths? - are we prepared
to let God use them?
West-Wonderings. What needs changing in my life? Can I ask God to change my mind,
thoughts, and wonderings?
The Big question: What would God do with your now, earnings, strengths, and how
would He want to change your thoughts if he were living your life and had your
body and was in your situation?
One camper asked Jesus to change her life and many others were helped in various
ways. God was at work throughout the camp –thank you for your prayers.
Even though we were limited in the range of places we could go to it was great
to walk around the area and see the renewing that God is doing to the trees and
wild flowers. Other camp activities included regulars such as a choice afternoon
and hunt the leader with leaders dressed up in “national costume” Any
onlooker would probably come to the conclusion that they may have been deported! –A
few looked “very suss”
A car rally with teams using custom built cardboard cars started well but soon
deteriorated into a kind of smash up derby as pit crews took things personally
splashing “water based fuel” around and engaging in sabotage, -but
a great time was had by all?!
Sadly we had to turn some away from camp again this year but in 2007 we are shifting
to a larger place so we should be able to cater for all!!
